- Three platforms that hire from West Africa
- The portfolio that beats a degree
- Getting paid across borders without losing fees
The shift to remote work has theoretically opened the global job market to anyone with a laptop and a reliable connection. However, the reality for talent in West Africa is often blocked by geographic restrictions, payment processing issues, and a lack of local mentorship. Breaking into this market requires a very deliberate strategy.
Focus on skills, not just certificates
International employers hiring remotely care about one thing above all else: can you deliver the work independently? A beautifully formatted CV is nice, but a live portfolio is undeniable proof. If you are a developer, your GitHub profile is your CV. If you are a designer, your Behance or personal website is your resume. Focus your energy on building three high-quality projects that solve real problems, rather than collecting dozens of basic tutorial certificates.
Where to look
Traditional platforms like Upwork and Fiverr are heavily saturated and often drive prices down to unsustainable levels. Instead, target niche job boards designed specifically for global remote work. Platforms like Wellfound (formerly AngelList), We Work Remotely, and Remote OK feature startups that are much more willing to hire globally based on merit.
- Filter for "Worldwide" or "Anywhere" rather than specific time zones if you are willing to work asynchronously.
- Look for companies that already have distributed teams.
- Do not ignore open-source bounties as a way to build initial credibility and earn your first dollars.
The payment hurdle
Getting the job is only half the battle; getting paid is the other. Many global companies default to PayPal, which has significant limitations in many African countries. Be proactive during the interview process. Suggest alternatives like Payoneer, Deel, or direct crypto stablecoin transfers if the company is web3-friendly. Being prepared with payment solutions shows the employer you are professional and ready to integrate smoothly.
Your next step
Update your LinkedIn profile today. Remove vague terms like "Enthusiastic Learner" and replace them with concrete skills: "React Developer | UI Designer". Ensure your location is set accurately, but explicitly state "Open to Remote Worldwide" in your headline.
